(x − a)(x − b) < 0 with a < b ⇒ a < x < b
Wavy curve: mark the roots; rightmost interval +, then alternate
|x − a| is the distance of x from a on the number line
|x − a| + |x − b| is smallest (= b − a) for every x from a to b

60-second shortcut · Think distance

|x − 2| + |x − 8| = 6 holds for every x from 2 to 8: the two distances always add up to the gap.
