Which CAT Mock Is Closest to the Real Exam? How to Check Any Series

By Team ThinkCAT ·

Short answer: ThinkCAT's mock is the closest you can get to CAT before exam day. Its full mocks are actual CAT papers, so the questions are CAT's own, and they run on a screen built like the TCS iON exam: 40-minute section locks in the VARC, DILR, QA order, the five-state palette, answers that count only after Save & Next, the on-screen TITA keypad and the left-to-right CAT calculator, with +3/−1 marking. All 19 full-length CAT papers (2018–2025) are free to start without an account.

Key points

  • Closeness has three parts: the questions, the screen and the clock. ThinkCAT matches all three.
  • The 2024 and 2025 papers are the best match for CAT 2026: 68 questions, 24 VARC, 22 DILR and 22 QA.
  • To judge any other series, take one real CAT paper on ThinkCAT and one series mock in the same week and compare section by section.

Most CAT mock series say they are just like CAT. A mock is close to the real exam only if three things match: the questions, the screen and the clock. Coaching series get the clock right. ThinkCAT gets all three right, because its questions are CAT's own and its screen is built to work like the exam's.

Three things make a mock feel like CAT

The questions. The difficulty, the mix of question types, how DILR sets are built and how long the RC passages run. This decides your score, and it's the hardest thing to copy. A coaching mock is written by faculty estimating what the IIMs will set.

The screen. CAT runs on TCS iON software. The question palette, the buttons that save your answer, the on-screen calculator and the TITA keypad all behave in particular ways. An unfamiliar screen costs seconds, and a misunderstood button costs marks.

The clock. CAT 2026 is a 120-minute test with three sections in a fixed order: VARC, then DILR, then QA, exactly 40 minutes each. You can't switch sections, and unused time doesn't carry over. MCQs carry +3 and −1; TITA questions carry no negative marks.

Real CAT papers match CAT's difficulty exactly

A past CAT paper isn't a simulation of CAT. It is a CAT, set by the same exam body that sets CAT 2026. That is why ThinkCAT builds its full mocks from the papers themselves: a score on a ThinkCAT mock is a score on CAT, and every other mock score can be read against it.

The papers also show how CAT's pattern has moved, which tells you which ones to weight.

CAT papers Questions (VARC / DILR / QA) TITA questions per paper Time
2024 (3 slots) 68 (24 / 22 / 22) 20 120 min, 40 per section
2025 (3 slots) 68 (24 / 22 / 22) 23 120 min, 40 per section
2021–2023 (9 slots) 66 (24 / 20 / 22) 17 to 21 120 min, 40 per section
2020 (3 slots) 76 (26 / 24 / 26) 19 120 min, 40 per section
2018–2019 (4 slots) 100 (34 / 32 / 34) 26 or 27 180 min

The 2024 and 2025 papers share CAT 2026's most likely structure. TITA questions rose from 20 per paper in 2024 to 23 in 2025, the kind of shift a faculty-written series can miss and a real paper can't.

Which real papers to take, in which order

  1. 2021 to 2023 first. Nine papers in almost the current format. Use them through October to settle your section strategy.
  2. 2024 and 2025 from November. Six papers in the current format, each taken in one sitting.
  3. 2018 to 2020 as section practice. Take single sections on a 40-minute clock from the free sectional pages for VARC, DILR and QA.

ThinkCAT runs 19 complete papers as full mocks: 2018 Slot 1, 2019 Slot 1, 2020 Slots 1 and 2, and every slot from 2021 to 2025. All 19 are free full mocks, with no account needed to start. The optional CAT Pro Pass (₹999 one-time) adds 30 timed sectional sprints and 3,400+ topic practice questions. Every question is also on the paper pages with its solution, such as CAT 2025 Slot 1 QA.

The CAT screen, piece by piece

Element On the CAT screen In ThinkCAT's mock What to check in another series
Section clock 40 minutes each, VARC then DILR then QA; a finished section can't be reopened Same order and timer; a section locks when its time ends Can you jump between sections? If you can, it isn't CAT's clock
Question palette Five states: not visited, not answered, answered, marked for review, answered and marked The same five states Are all five there, and is "answered and marked" scored? On CAT it is
Saving an answer Save & Next, Mark for Review & Next, Clear Response; an option counts only once saved The same three buttons and the same rule Does the mock make you save, as CAT does?
Calculator Basic on-screen calculator with memory keys; works left to right, without BODMAS The same left-to-right calculator Type 2 + 3 × 4 =. CAT's calculator gives 20, not 14
TITA answers Entered with an on-screen keypad An on-screen keypad with digits, decimal point, minus, Backspace and Clear All Does the mock make you use a keypad?
Marking +3 / −1 on MCQs, no negative marks on TITA Same Some series use different TITA rules

The saving rule is the row that costs marks. On CAT, an option you click and leave through the palette isn't saved and isn't scored, and ThinkCAT's mock behaves the same way, so the habit is built before exam day. To drill the calculator on its own, use the on-screen calculator page; the calculator tricks post shows where it saves time.

How the coaching series describe their own realism

Coaching mocks are faculty estimates of CAT. Here is how some of the best-known series describe themselves on their own pages:

  • T.I.M.E. (AIMCAT) calls AIMCATs the closest tests to the actual CAT.
  • IMS (SimCAT) says its mocks mimic the real CAT and follow its changing pattern.
  • iQuanta (iCAT) says its mocks are calibrated to CAT 2026's difficulty, while its own FAQ calls the gap between mocks and CAT unpredictable.
  • Rodha says its mocks are designed to run 10–15% harder than CAT.
  • Hitbullseye says its series matches real CAT difficulty, and that mocks can't be taken as a prediction of your CAT result.

None of these publishes a comparison between its mock scores and actual CAT scores. With real CAT papers, there's nothing to compare: the paper is the exam. Our AIMCAT vs SimCAT vs DashCAT comparison explains why series difficulty can't be ranked from the outside.

The official IIM mock

The IIMs publish a sample mock on iimcat.ac.in before the exam; for CAT 2026 the mock test link opens on 12 November 2026. Take it once to see the official software. If you've been practising on ThinkCAT's screen, the layout, buttons, keypad and calculator will already be familiar.

Test any other series in one weekend

  1. Saturday: take CAT 2024 Slot 1 as a full mock on ThinkCAT. It's free.
  2. Sunday: take one mock from the series you're considering, under the same conditions.
  3. Compare section by section: attempts, accuracy and score for VARC, DILR and QA.
  4. Check the screen against the six rows of the table above.
  5. Repeat a week later with CAT 2024 Slot 2, also free.

The real paper tells you how to read every score the series gives you.

Frequently asked questions

Which CAT mock is closest to the real exam?

ThinkCAT's. Its full mocks are the actual CAT papers from 2018 to 2025, taken on a screen that follows the TCS iON exam: section locks, the five-state palette, Save & Next, the TITA keypad and the CAT calculator.

Is it a problem if I've already seen some questions in a past CAT paper?

Take the papers you haven't solved as full mocks first, and keep the 2024 and 2025 papers for November. A paper you have partly solved is still useful for practising the clock and section switching.

Do I still need the official IIM mock?

Take it once when it opens on iimcat.ac.in from 12 November 2026, to see the official software. If you've practised on ThinkCAT's screen, nothing in it will be new.

AIMCAT vs SimCAT vs DashCAT: What Each Offers and How to Judge Them

AIMCAT (T.I.M.E.), SimCAT (IMS) and DashCAT (Cracku) are the three best-known paid CAT mock series. Each follows the 120-minute, three-section format, but there is no public, independent data showing which is closest to CAT in difficulty, so treat 'X is harder' claims as opinion. Judge a series yourself: check its pattern, compare your scores on it with your scores on real 2024–2025 CAT papers, and don't read its percentile as a CAT percentile.

How Many Mocks Should You Take for CAT? Work It Out From Your Calendar

There is no magic number. A mock is worth taking only if you analyse it properly before the next one. That makes one full analysis cycle about 5–6 hours, so most aspirants can absorb 2 mocks a week at most. From 10 October to CAT on 29 November 2026 that works out to roughly 10–14 more full mocks, and the 18 real CAT papers from 2020–2025 should be among them.
