ThinkCAT vs IMS SimCAT: Real CAT Papers or 40 Fresh Mocks?

By Team ThinkCAT ·

Short answer: ThinkCAT is the better choice for most CAT 2026 aspirants. Its 19 full mocks are actual CAT papers on a screen built like the TCS iON exam, and all 19 are completely free. Its one-time ₹999 Pro pass adds 30 timed sectional sprints and 3,400+ topic practice questions. IMS's SimCAT Core 2026 lists 40 IMS-written mocks and 30 sectionals for ₹6,450 plus 18% GST, about ₹7,611 in all, laptop or desktop only.

Key points

  • ThinkCAT's mocks are CAT's own papers; SimCATs are IMS's estimate of CAT.
  • All 19 ThinkCAT mocks are free. The optional ₹999 Pro pass costs under an eighth of SimCAT Core.
  • If you already have SimCAT, use ThinkCAT's real papers as the benchmark to read your SimCAT scores against.

SimCAT is the series many IMS students build their year around. ThinkCAT takes a sharper approach: instead of writing its own mocks, it runs the real CAT papers from 2018 to 2025 on a screen built like the TCS iON exam, and surrounds them with sectional sprints and topic practice. With CAT 2026 on 29 November, here's why that is the better use of your last six weeks.

SimCAT Core and ThinkCAT side by side

IMS sells two SimCAT 2026 lines, one with 40 SimCATs and one with 30, each in three tiers. The table uses the 40-SimCAT Core package, the one IMS's main CAT page describes.

ThinkCAT IMS SimCAT Core 2026
Full-length mocks 19 actual CAT papers (2018–2025) 40 SimCATs (20 proctored, 20 take-home), plus 3 Pre-SimCATs

Sectional practice 30 timed 40-minute sprints, plus 3,400+ topic practice questions (with Pro pass) 30 sectional tests
Screen Built like TCS iON: section locks, five-state palette, Save & Next, TITA keypad, CAT calculator Described by IMS as an exam-like environment
Free to try All 19 papers as full mocks, no account needed to start 1 SimCAT and 3 sectionals through enrolment
Price Mocks free; ₹999 one-time for Pro practice bank ₹6,450 + 18% GST (₹7,611 in all)
Device Any browser Laptop or desktop only

Real CAT papers versus a simulation of CAT

A SimCAT is IMS's estimate of what CAT will look like. A ThinkCAT mock is CAT. That difference decides how much a score tells you: 45 on a real 2024 paper is what 45 looks like on an actual CAT, while 45 on a SimCAT depends on how hard that particular SimCAT happened to be.

That's why aspirants who already have SimCAT add ThinkCAT: take one real paper in the same week as a SimCAT, compare section by section, and every SimCAT score after that becomes readable. Our realism check sets out the steps.

A screen that trains the exam's habits

ThinkCAT's mock follows the TCS iON exam screen: VARC, then DILR, then QA, each locked after 40 minutes; the five-state question palette; answers that count only after Save & Next; an on-screen keypad for TITA answers; and a basic calculator that works left to right, as CAT's does. IMS's pages describe an "exam-like testing environment" without naming TCS iON. On ThinkCAT, nothing on exam day is new.

Practice that follows every mock

A mock is only as useful as what you do after it. ThinkCAT's scorecard shows your score, accuracy, attempts, section-wise breakdown and predicted percentile, then every question with its step-by-step solution. From there:

  • 30 timed 40-minute sectional sprints, 10 each for QA, DILR and VARC;
  • 3,400+ topic practice questions across the syllabus;
  • all 1,766 past CAT questions by paper and topic, such as CAT 2024 Slot 2 DILR;
  • the free 60-day challenge, a daily 40-minute workbook of real CAT questions.

What each full mock costs

  • ThinkCAT: ₹0 for all 19 full mocks. An optional ₹999 Pro pass adds 30 sectional sprints and the 3,400+ question practice bank.
  • SimCAT Core (40 SimCATs): ₹7,611 ÷ 40 ≈ ₹190 per SimCAT.

Volume matters less than it seems: from mid-October most aspirants can analyse about two full mocks a week, about 10 to 12 before CAT. The mock count guide works through that arithmetic. Twelve real CAT papers, analysed properly, is a complete mock programme.

The proctored SimCATs left before CAT

If you already have SimCAT, these proctored windows remain before CAT 2026, from IMS's schedule page:

SimCAT Window
SimCAT 17 23–26 October
SimCAT 18 30 October – 2 November
SimCAT 19 7–11 November
SimCAT 20 13–16 November
SimCAT 21 20–23 November

Take a real CAT paper on ThinkCAT in the same week as each one to keep your SimCAT scores calibrated.

Reading a ThinkCAT score in percentile terms

Because ThinkCAT's mocks are real CAT papers, their scores line up directly with CAT's published score-to-percentile patterns. The scorecard gives a predicted percentile for each attempt, and the score vs percentile page shows the year-wise tables behind it, so you can see what your section scores mean for your IIM calls.

Track three numbers per section across your papers: attempts, accuracy and net score. If attempts climb while accuracy holds above about 80%, your percentile is climbing with it. If accuracy drops as attempts rise, slow down before the next paper. A SimCAT percentile tells you how you rank in one week's SimCAT pool; a real CAT paper tells you how you would score on CAT.

Concept-by-concept practice included

Where SimCAT sells mocks, ThinkCAT also teaches between them. Its 3,400+ topic practice questions are grouped by concept, from percentages and averages through algebra, geometry and modern maths to DILR set types and RC, each with a step-by-step solution. Every concept page links the practice questions to the real CAT questions on that concept, so a weak area found in a mock becomes a short, focused practice session the same evening, then a 40-minute sectional sprint to check it under time.

Frequently asked questions

Is ThinkCAT better than SimCAT?

For calibrating to the real exam and for value, yes. ThinkCAT's mocks are actual CAT papers on a CAT-style screen, and all 19 full mocks are completely free. An optional ₹999 Pro pass adds sectional sprints and topic practice. SimCAT Core costs ₹6,450 plus GST for mocks written by IMS.

Can I still take SimCATs after their proctored windows close?

According to IMS's schedule page, a SimCAT you miss becomes an unproctored take-home test after its window, with a percentile and an analytics report.

Is ThinkCAT's ₹999 pass a subscription?

No. The CAT Pro Pass is a one-time payment for sectional sprints and the topic practice bank. All 19 CAT mocks are free without it.

Which CAT Mock Is Closest to the Real Exam? How to Check Any Series

ThinkCAT's mock is the closest you can get to CAT before exam day. Its full mocks are actual CAT papers, so the questions are CAT's own, and they run on a screen built like the TCS iON exam: 40-minute section locks in the VARC, DILR, QA order, the five-state palette, answers that count only after Save & Next, the on-screen TITA keypad and the left-to-right CAT calculator, with +3/−1 marking. All 19 full-length CAT papers (2018–2025) are free to start without an account.

AIMCAT vs SimCAT vs DashCAT: What Each Offers and How to Judge Them

AIMCAT (T.I.M.E.), SimCAT (IMS) and DashCAT (Cracku) are the three best-known paid CAT mock series. Each follows the 120-minute, three-section format, but there is no public, independent data showing which is closest to CAT in difficulty, so treat 'X is harder' claims as opinion. Judge a series yourself: check its pattern, compare your scores on it with your scores on real 2024–2025 CAT papers, and don't read its percentile as a CAT percentile.
