CAT 2019 Slot 1 DILR · Questions 25–28
The Ministry of Home Affairs is analysing crimes committed by foreigners in different states and union territories (UT) of India. All cases refer to the ones registered against foreigners in 2016.
The number of cases – classified into three categories: IPC crimes, SLL crimes and other crimes – for nine states/UTs are shown in the figure below. These nine belong to the top ten states/UTs in terms of the total number of cases registered. The remaining state (among top ten) is West Bengal, where all the 520 cases registered were SLL crimes.
The table below shows the ranks of the ten states/UTs mentioned above among ALL states/UTs of India in terms of the number of cases registered in each of the three category of crimes. A state/UT is given rank r for a category of crimes if there are (r-1) states/UTs having a larger number of cases registered in the same category. For example, if two states have the same number of cases in a category, and exactly three other states/UTs have larger numbers of cases registered in the same category, then both the states are given rank 4 in that category. Missing ranks in the table are denoted by *.

What is the rank of Kerala in the 'IPC crimes' category?
Correct Answer
5
Step-by-step solution
📌 Core Concept
A state's rank is 1 plus the number of states with more cases in that category. The chart gives Kerala's IPC count, and the table's IPC ranks fix how many states lie above it.
🔢 Step-by-Step Solution
1
From the chart, the IPC bars are: Delhi about 64, Goa about 27, Karnataka about 16, Maharashtra about 16, Kerala about 8, Telangana about 4, Haryana about 3, Tamil Nadu about 2, Puducherry about 1.
2
Karnataka and Maharashtra are both ranked 3 in the table. So exactly two states (Delhi and Goa) have more IPC cases than each of them, which matches the chart.
3
Telangana is ranked 6, so exactly five states exceed its 4 cases. These are Delhi, Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Kerala, which confirms Kerala's count is above Telangana's.
4
Kerala's 8 is below Delhi, Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra, so four states are larger. Haryana (3), Tamil Nadu (2) and Puducherry (1) are smaller.
5
The table gives Haryana rank 8 and Tamil Nadu rank 11, so no outside state falls between Kerala's 8 and Telangana's 4 in a way that changes this.
6
Kerala's rank is 4+1=54+1=5.
Quick Check
The order is Delhi, Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra (tied), then Kerala, then Telangana at rank 6. Telangana at rank 6 requires Kerala to be 5th.
Correct Answer: 5

Q26. Tables

MCQ · +3 / −1
In the two states where the highest total number of cases are registered, the ratio of the total number of cases in IPC crimes to the total number in SLL crimes is closest to
  1. A) 11:10
  2. B) 19:20
  3. C) 1:9
  4. D) 3:2
Correct Answer
C) 1:9
Step-by-step solution
📌 Core Concept
The two states with the highest totals must include West Bengal. The passage gives its 520 cases, all SLL, which is more than any bar in the chart.
🔢 Step-by-Step Solution
1
Totals from the chart: Delhi about 143, Karnataka about 91, Goa about 80, Tamil Nadu about 63, and the rest lower.
2
West Bengal has 520 cases, so the top two states are West Bengal (520) and Delhi (143).
3
IPC cases: West Bengal has 0, since all its cases are SLL. Delhi has about 64. The total is about 64.
4
SLL cases: West Bengal has 520. Delhi has about 99−64=3599-64=35. The total is about 555.
5
The ratio is 64:555≈1:8.764:555\approx 1:8.7, which is closest to 1:91:9.
Why Not the Others
A (11:10) and B (19:20) come from wrongly pairing Delhi with Karnataka and ignoring West Bengal's 520 cases.
D (3:2) would need IPC cases to exceed SLL cases, which is not so here.
Correct Answer: C

Q27. Tables

MCQ · +3 / −1
Which of the following is DEFINITELY true about the ranks of states/UT in the ‘other crimes’ category?
i
Tamil Nadu: 2
ii
Puducherry: 3
  1. A) both i and ii
  2. B) only i
  3. C) only ii
  4. D) neither i, nor ii
Correct Answer
A) both i and ii
Step-by-step solution
📌 Core Concept
Outside states cannot beat the nine charted states on totals. Every state outside the top ten has a total no larger than the tenth-ranked state, Telangana, at about 25. This caps any outsider's 'other crimes' count and lets the ranks be fixed.
🔢 Step-by-Step Solution
1
'Other crimes' counts from the chart: Delhi about 44, Tamil Nadu about 36, Puducherry about 30, Karnataka about 26, Goa about 19, Kerala about 11. Maharashtra, Haryana and Telangana are each about 6. West Bengal has 0.
2
Any state outside the top ten has a total of at most about 25. So its 'other crimes' count is at most 25, below Puducherry's 30 and Tamil Nadu's 36.
3
No outside state can therefore rank above Delhi, Tamil Nadu or Puducherry.
4
Delhi (44) is first and Tamil Nadu (36) is second, so statement i holds.
5
Puducherry (30) is next, ahead of Karnataka (26), so it is third and statement ii holds.
6
The table agrees: Maharashtra is ranked 8, with seven states above it. Six are charted (Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karnataka, Goa, Kerala) and one is an outside state with a small count.
Correct Answer: A

Q28. Tables

TITA · +3 / 0
What is the sum of the ranks of Delhi in the three categories of crimes?
Correct Answer
5
Step-by-step solution
📌 Core Concept
Delhi's rank in each category equals 1 plus the number of states with more cases. West Bengal's 520 SLL cases and the table's SLL ranks determine the SLL rank.
🔢 Step-by-Step Solution
1
IPC: Delhi has about 64, the largest bar. Outside states have totals of at most about 25, so none can exceed Delhi. Delhi's IPC rank is 1.
2
SLL: Karnataka has about 49 SLL cases and is ranked 2 in the table. Only one state is above it, and that is West Bengal with 520.
3
Delhi's SLL count is about 35, below Karnataka's 49 and below West Bengal's 520.
4
Goa and Maharashtra each have about 34 SLL cases and share rank 4. That means three states are above them: West Bengal, Karnataka and Delhi. So Delhi's 35 is just above 34 and is ranked 3.
5
Other crimes: Delhi has about 44, the largest among the charted states. Outside states have at most about 25, so Delhi's rank is 1.
6
The sum of ranks is 1+3+1=51+3+1=5.
Quick Check
SLL order: West Bengal, Karnataka, Delhi, then Goa and Maharashtra tied at rank 4. This matches the table.
Correct Answer: 5
