CAT 2020 Slot 2 DILR · Questions 1–4
Twenty five coloured beads are to be arranged in a grid comprising of five rows and five columns. Each cell in the grid must contain exactly one bead. Each bead is coloured either Red, Blue or Green.
While arranging the beads along any of the five rows or along any of the five columns, the rules given below are to be followed:
1
Two adjacent beads along the same row or column are always of different colours.
2
There is at least one Green bead between any two Blue beads along the same row or column.
3
There is at least one Blue and at least one Green bead between any two Red beads along the same row or column.
Every unique, complete arrangement of twenty five beads is called a configuration.

The total number of possible configurations using beads of only two colors is:
Correct Answer
2
Step-by-step solution
Clue Breakdown:
Constraint 1: Adjacent beads in the same row or column must be different.
Constraint 2: At least one Green bead between any two Blue beads.
Constraint 3: At least one Blue and one Green bead between any two Red beads.
Step-by-Step Deduction Grid:
1
Identify Valid Color Pairs:
Red & Blue: Fails due to the Red Beads Rule.
Red & Green: Fails due to the Red Beads Rule.
Blue & Green: Satisfies all constraints.
2
Determine Arrangement Pattern:
Alternating Blue and Green beads in each row and column.
3
Construct Possible Grids:
Pattern 1:
`` B G B G B G B G B G B G B G B G B G B G B G B G B ``
Pattern 2:
`` G B G B G B G B G B G B G B G B G B G B G B G B G ``
Question Resolution: Only two configurations are possible using two colors, adhering to all constraints.

Q2. Grids

What is the maximum possible number of Red beads that can appear in any configuration?
Correct Answer
9
Step-by-step solution
📌 Core Concept
Rule 3 limits how many Reds a single row or column can hold. Count Reds row-wise and column-wise to find the maximum.
🔢 Step-by-Step Solution
1
Two Reds in a line need a Blue and a Green between them, so their positions differ by at least 3. In a line of 5 cells the only possible Red pairs are positions {1,4}, {1,5} and {2,5}. Three Reds would need at least 7 cells. So every row and every column holds at most 2 Reds.
2
Position 3 appears in none of these pairs. A Red in the middle column cannot share its row with another Red, because the other Red would sit at distance 1 or 2 from it. The same holds for a Red in the middle row and its column.
3
Suppose the middle column holds no Red. Then Reds lie only in columns 1, 2, 4 and 5, with at most 2 each, giving at most 8.
4
Suppose the middle column holds 2 Reds. Those two rows each have only 1 Red, so the total is at most 2×1+3×2=82\times1+3\times2=8.
5
Suppose the middle column holds exactly 1 Red. That row has 1 Red and the other four rows have at most 2 each, so the total is at most 1+4×2=91+4\times2=9.
6
Nine is reachable. Place Reds at (1,1), (1,4), (4,1), (4,4), (2,2), (2,5), (5,2), (5,5) and (3,3). Every row and column pair is one of the allowed pairs, and the remaining cells can be filled with Blue and Green to satisfy the rules.
Quick Check
The cases give at most 8, 8 and 9, so the maximum is 9.
Correct Answer: 9

Q3. Grids

What is the minimum number of Blue beads in any configuration?
Correct Answer
6
Step-by-step solution
📌 Core Concept
Find how few Blues each row and column can get away with, then show that the bare minimum of 5 cannot be reached.
🔢 Step-by-Step Solution
1
A line with no Blue uses only Red and Green. Adjacent beads must differ, so it alternates, giving R G R G R or G R G R G. In both, two Reds have no Blue between them, which breaks Rule 3. So every row and column has at least 1 Blue, and the total is at least 5.
2
Exactly 5 Blues would mean exactly one Blue in every row and every column.
3
List the valid one-Blue rows. With one Blue, a row cannot have 4 Greens, because Greens cannot be adjacent. So it has 1 or 2 Reds.
With 1 Red the row is G R G B G or G B G R G.
With 2 Reds the row is R B G R G, R G B R G, R G B G R, G R G B R or G R B G R.
4
In all these rows the middle cell is Green or Blue, never Red.
5
If every row has one Blue, the middle column has no Red. It is then built only from Green and Blue with no two adjacent equal, which forces at least 2 Blues (G B G B G).
6
That contradicts one Blue per column, so 5 Blues is impossible.
7
A valid configuration with 6 Blues exists, where one line carries a second Blue.
Quick Check
The lower bound is 5 and 5 is impossible, so the minimum is 6.
Correct Answer: 6

Two Red beads have been placed in 'second row, third column' and 'third row, second column'. How many more Red beads can be placed so as to maximise the number of Red beads used in the configuration?
Correct Answer
6
Step-by-step solution
📌 Core Concept
Use the allowed Red positions in a line ({1,4}, {1,5}, {2,5}) to see which cells the two given Reds rule out, then count the most Reds that can still be added.
🔢 Step-by-Step Solution
1
A Red in the middle column of a row cannot have another Red in that row. Likewise a Red in the middle row of a column cannot have another Red in that column.
2
The Red at (2,3) is in the middle column, so row 2 has no other Red. Its column 3 can take one more Red, at row 5, since {2,5} is allowed.
3
The Red at (3,2) is in the middle row, so column 2 has no other Red. Its row 3 can take one more Red, at column 5.
4
The Red at (3,5) is in the middle row of column 5, so column 5 has no other Red. The Red at (5,3) is in the middle column of row 5, so row 5 has no other Red.
5
Column 2 is closed, column 3 is full, and column 5 is closed. Rows 1 and 4 can therefore use only columns 1 and 4, which is the allowed pair {1,4}. Add (1,1), (1,4), (4,1) and (4,4). Each of columns 1 and 4 then has Reds in rows 1 and 4, which is allowed.
6
The total is 8 Reds: the two given plus (5,3), (3,5), (1,1), (1,4), (4,1) and (4,4).
7
Nine cannot be reached. It would need row 3 to hold 2 Reds and rows 1, 4 and 5 to hold 2 each, drawn from columns 1 and 4 only. Column 1 would then hold 3 Reds, which is impossible.
8
So 6 more Reds can be added.
Quick Check
8−2=68-2=6 additional Reds.
Correct Answer: 6
